Windsheim, 27 July 1925

Dear Hans,

How are you? I have been home for good since Hanna died. It really hurts that our Hanna had to leave us so quickly. I was still home the Sunday before, and I had not imagined that I would not see Hanna alive again. When I left, she said to me ‘I will be so happy when you come back home - it has been so boring here.’ When I asked what I should bring her, she said she would like a bouquet of flowers. Sadly, I had to place the bouquet in her casket. She was so beautiful laying there, one would think she was sleeping. She was wearing her white dress and the patent leather shoes you sent from America. She was wearing a garland of myrtle and had a bridal bouquet of white roses, both from Eberhard. The casket was white with gold trim. Mama laid little roses to the right and left of Hanna’s head. With the white veil, she looked like Sleeping Beauty. I still cannot believe that Hanna is not with us. When I stand at her grave, I cannot quite imagine that she is buried there. Papa planted fuchsia and small blue flowers on her grave. It is beautiful. We visit Hanna every day when it is not raining. Yesterday (Sunday), we brought flowers.

The garden is really beautiful right now. Papa planted flowers up front in the square - they look like lilies and have lovely colors, red, etc. Two are blooming at the moment and many are about to bloom. Also, our grapevine is thick with grapes, and there are many peaches. You probably have not heard that Scholli had to be put down. He got rabies and went blind. Papa shot him. Buli and Fritzel are doing well. I spend a little time in the garden every day. We have a lot of work. That’s all I know for today.

All the best from your sister Marie. Be well.
