Permissions, Reproductions, and Copyright

Content on this website meets one or more of the following conditions: material created by German Heritage in Letters project staff and volunteers; material to which German Heritage in Letters has permission to provide access; material in the public domain or with no known restrictions on use; or material made available for research and education under the fair use principle.

Material on our website is provided for use in classroom teaching with no further permission necessary. Transcriptions, translations, and item metadata provided on the website is made available under the terms of a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International License. Images of letters and other documents are provided thanks to the generous collaboration of libraries, archives, and other private entities, and we have no authority to grant permission for republication or reproduction. For contact information for permission to use specific items, please review the rights information for the collection containing the items that interest you.

If you believe that your rights have been infringed or not attributed properly, or used without the required permission, please contact us at permissions@germanletters.org. Please include the following information:

  • Your name and contact information (including a physical mailing address, email address, and phone number)
  • The exact URL at which you found the material
  • Details describing the material, such as title, date, etc.
  • A statement that you are the holder of relevant copyright/permission rights for the material, or authorized to act on behalf of the holder
  • The reason(s) you believe these rights have been infringed, with any relevant documentation
  • A statement that you in good faith believe the use of the material is not authorized by the rights holder and does not fall within permissible use guidelines

Upon receipt of your request, German Heritage in Letters project staff will:

  • Promptly acknowledge receipt of your request
  • If requested, temporarily remove material from public view while the request is under review
  • Assess the validity of the request, take appropriate action, and communicate those actions to you
