Es wäre vielleicht gut mehr Bewegung in frischer Luft. Das Essen sollte in frischem Gemüse u. Obst abwechselnd genommen werden. Dort geht es als noch soweiter [sic]. Die Jungen sind Soldaten u. die Alten haben tüchtig Arbeit. Hier in Wiesbaden war auch Confirmation, Hermann Müller von Idstein wurde auch ein Mädchen konfirmiert. Da war auch Rudolf Müller von Aumenau mit Familie hier. Er ist bis jetzt noch nicht Soldat sondern strickt für die Wehrmacht. Den beiden Brüdern Müller geht es gut, sie haben gute Geschäfte. Hermann hat sich auch jetzt ein Haus gekauft in Idstein für's Geschäft u. zum darüber wohnen, für 25000 Mark. Mittags 2 Uhr ging ich fort um 3/4 9 Uhr abends mit 1 1/2 Rast Hohe Wurzel kam ich nach Hause. Johanna konnte da nicht mitgehen. Frau [Sophie?] Bruder, diese war 3 Tage zu Besuch bei uns, sonst ist sie in meinem Alter heim in Kirberg. Es geht ihr daselbst gut, freut sich, daß sie da gut unter gebracht ist, da die Verwandten in Steeden u Schadeck keine Möglichkeit haben sie aufzunehmen. Walther Eikmeier von Südamerika ist auch da. Wie wir hörten, gefällt es ihm nicht mehr hier, soll sehr enttäuscht sein über die Verhältnisse, daß sie am liebsten nach Weihnachten wieder zurück wollen. Eben sind hier die Bauern auch an der Ernte, aber das Wetter war bis jetzt nicht günstig es regnete sehr viel u. man markt schon daß der Sommer bald herum ist. Dieses Jahr ist es mit dem Obst etwas besser als voriges Jahr, ich habe auch schon Marmelade u. Gelee gekocht, auch sonst als etwas ein= gemacht, doch ist hier alles sehr teuer. Erdbeeren von 35 - 50 Pfg das Pfund u. Kirschen auch 40 Pfg u. s. w. Der Zucker kostet auch 40 Pfg das Pfund. Gemüse gibt es eben reichlich. Vater schrieb Dir lieber Karl daß wir von Nordenstadt die 600 Mark bekommen haben. Jetzt hat Wilhelm die ganze Wirtschaft übernommen man kann sagen gepachtet. Die Alten erhalten Essen u. Trinken u. jeden Monat 20 Mark Taschengeld, alles andere macht Wilhelm u. seine Frau diese bezahlen dann auch die Zinsen u. Abtragung von den Schulden welche noch übrig sind. Gretchen sprach mit Vater sie denkt bestimmt daß sie alles bezahlen können. Natürlich müssen sie anders arbeiten u. zusammen halten wie es der Alte machte. We left at 12 and were at the Kellerskopf at 3, from there to Platte where we arrived shortly before 6. On the way home a rain shower surprised us, so Johanna took the bus, I arrived shortly before 8 at home[...]Walter Eikmeier from South America is also here, he does not like the situation here.<br /><br />Last week we also got the 600 marks which are supposed to be paid off in 52 years, via the debt-relief office. The money for 2 <em>Morgen</em> land, which were part of the 36 for the Erbenheim Airport, was distributed almost entirely to the creditors. The fellow from Nordenstadt got 80 marks I was told by Gretchen, Wilhelm’s wife, on Sunday. The latter had expected a different outcome and was of the opinion that he had something to say in the matter and should receive the largest part. Now he was subjected to the experience that the money was distributed to the creditors without his agreement, and even the interest payments, on which he had counted so strongly since April 1st 1936, were distributed. We are still to receive outstanding interest of 200 marks, which are however partially paid off with the 45 marks worth of <em>Leistungen</em> [goods and services] given as of April 1st of last year. Gretchen also reported that <em>der Alte</em> had thought that the debt-relief office had mishandled the matter but his representative told him this was untrue. He has always had difficulty understanding what is right and proper. He will think of himself three times before he thinks of anyone else. Kartoffel gibt es ja genug u. das Brot erhalten wir von dem Alfred Fink aus Biebrich, dieser ist Alberts Bruder u. hat in Biebrich ein Haus mit Bäckerei gekauft, er bringt mit einem Motorrad seine Waren hierher. Ich u. Vater bekommen 2 runde Bauernbrode jede Woche, diese sind sehr gut. So haben wir ja das Nötigste zum Leben, aber das viele drum u. dran was Ihr habt kann man hier sich nicht erlauben, wenn man Sonntags draußen ein Glas Bier trinkt so kostet es 35 - 40 Pfg. Ich muß an den alten [Deffert?] denken wie es dem wohl in Berlin gefällt u. wie sie sich hier einstellen wollen, ob sie nicht bald bereuen nicht drüben geblieben zu sein, wo sie doch auch hier nichts haben. Nun Er hat ein gutes Mundwerk u. wird sich wohl auch an die Parteikrippe machen, denn hier kann nur der durchkommen welcher sich dazu hält. Wie ich aus Margies Brief lesen konnte <s>haben</s> haben die Kinder Keuchhusten? Every week Father and I get two round loaves of peasant bread, it is very good. This way we have what we need, but all the many extras you have one cannot afford here. Es hat uns sehr gefreut als wieder ein Zeichen von Euch zu bekommen woraus wir sehe konnten, daß es bei Euch noch gut geht. Zur gleicher Zeit erhielten wir auch von Willi, Hedwig u. Tante Emmel's Briefe die uns Kunde gaben, daß bei ihnen so- weit noch alles munter sei, was uns auch sehr gefreut hat. Bei uns geht es Gott sei dank auch noch gut, die Ma ist etwas erkältet, hatte vorige Woche stark den Schnupfen und anfangs Woche kam noch Durchfall dazu mit Kopf und Leibschmerzen, das heute in seiner Stärke nachgelassen hat. Das naßkalte Wetter trägt eben viel dazu bei, daß man mit diesen Sach-- geplagt wird. Bis jetzt hatten wir blos 2 x Frost gehabt Nachts, worauf am Tage es immer regnete zur Abwechslung schneite. Sonne und Sonnenschein ist eben hier schlecht zu finden im Monat Dezember. Hoffentlich läßt sich das neue Jahr besser an. Mir geht es soweit noch gut bis auf etwas Husten, für die Arbeit habe ich auch immernoch [sic] den nötigen Mut. Das ist gut, dadurch habe ich nie Langeweile. Lieber Karl Du fragst ob Du uns ein deutsches Magazin schicken sollst. Ich denke es ist nicht nötig. Willy schickt den Lutheraner Finks lesen die Abendschule u. diese bringt Johanna dann als mit u. Bibliotheken gibt es auch noch. Sogar mein Freund Rümpler hat jetzt einen Laden in der Wellritz= str. Da habe ich garnicht weit hin, nur müssen diese jetzt alle 20 Pfg. für das Buch nehmen, nur die Stadt welche eine große Bibliothek in der Rheinstr. in dem alten Kasernengebäude hat, darf zu einem billigeren Preis ausleihen, sie leiht meistens nur Bücher aus, von dem dritten Reich u. seinen Ideen, welche zur Belehrung des Volkes dienen. Die Bücher welche man so in den Läden holt sind der Bezahlung entsprechend gut in Stand, Jedes Buch erhält immer einen sauberen Umschlag. Vater sieht ja nicht gerne wenn ich mir Bücher hole, er meint das Geld sei hinausgeworfen. Er kann einen ganzen Abend in der Zeitung lesen, womit ich in einer Viertelstunde fertig bin, da mich die hohe Politik garnicht mehr interessiert. Lesen war ja immer meine schwache Seite u. wenn man viel zu Hause ist, ist es mir die liebste Unterhaltung. Ich habe immer zu nähen u. flicken, Luise Bender schickte mir Wolle zum stricken da sie keine Zeit hat u. Ernsts Mutter auch nicht mehr lebt, welche sonst ihre Strümpfe strickte. Vater ist hier auch wieder zu den Wollstrümpfen zurückgekehrt u. ich trage im Haus auch Selbstgestrickte Der Andreasmarkt ist immernoch [sic] jetzt aber Ende Oktober. Jetzt dauert er sogar 4 Tage von Donnerstag bis Sonntag. Es kam mir vor als sei er früher nicht so groß gewesen wie jetzt. Der Dippemarkt ist auch noch auf dem Luisenplatz. Eben war der Alfred Fink hier, er bringt uns zweimal die Woche Brot von Biebrich mit dem Motorrad. Er ist ein Kollege vom Bäcker Karl, Albert Fink kaufte ein Haus mit Bäckerei in Biebrich für ihn u. da muß er jetzt schaffen. Er sagte als ich ihn nach dem Geschäft frug Mein ganzes Leben ist Sorgen u. schaffen. Er hat mehrere Leute zur Arbeit aber die Lasten sind unerträglich, da kann sich Karl drüben trösten seinen Kollegen hier geht es auch nicht besser als ihm. Die kleinen Betriebe sollen hier alle hinweg. Johanna in Wiesbaden eine Wohnung suchen, denn die Wohnungen werden immer noch vierteljährig gekündigt. Sie fanden eine 3 Zimmerwohnung im Bismark ring 35 Hochpattere [sic] für 53 Mark. Es war unter vielen die Einzige welche für uns paßte. Sie ist ohne Mansarde u. nicht sehr groß aber für uns groß ge= nug. Es ist das Haus wo Fräulein Ilgen wohnte, ihre Schwester wohnt noch da. Hier in Steeden ist keine Wohnung zu haben. Sie wollen ja hier auch eine Siedlung anlegen nach Kerkerbach zu, auf dem Berg wo das Haus stand welches wir kaufen wollten, ob u. wann etwas aus der Sache wird weiß noch niemand u. darauf, daß dann Wohnungen leer werden können wir nicht warten. Ich sprach am Neujahrstage noch einmal mit Hedwigs Mutter, diese riet mir auch lieber uns in Wiesbaden etwas zu suchen als dauernt [sic] hier in Steeden zubleiben [sic], sie wollte auch hier nicht mehr wohnen. Diese Woche erhielten wir Fettkarten, wir gaben sie beim Kaufmann ab, wann es nun Butter gibt wußte er uns auch nicht zusagen [sic]. Johan= na war am zweiten Weihnachtstage in Schönborn auf der Verlobung von Karl Prätorius u. Greta Martin diese ist so alt wie Johanna. Herrmann Prätorius welcher Schneider in Hanover ist hat sich auch verlobt. So haben Prätoriuse dieses Jahr 4 Hochzeiten vor. Das gibt es auch selten, der Onkel kratzt sich schwer, wegen Gildas Ausstattung, hier kaufen die Jungen aber Bettzimmereinrichtungen von 4 - 500 Mark. Luise Bender liegt schon einige Tage im Bett eine Kuh hat sie geschlagen ans Bein, das hätte sie gleich besser schonen sollen, jetzt dauert es desdo [sic] länger, wir hatten zuerst die Schwester dann auch den Doktor, eben lassen die Schmerzen ja etwas nach da hoffen wir auch daß es bis nächste Woche wieder geht. Bei Hanjuste geht es einmal nicht gut. Die junge Frau ist ein richtiger Drachen, sie geht um mit der Goht, daß die Schwester welche eben hier war sagte, die Goht würde nicht an einer Krankheit sterben sondern am gebrochenen Herzen. Karl ist der Garniemand er zankt auch einmal aber dann läßt er auch wieder alles gehen wie es will. Der arme Heinrich ist sehr zubedauern [sic], was es da auch noch weiter gibt sicher nichts Gutes. Der Schadecker Otto war auch Weihnachten zu Hause. Er ist bei Magdeburg als Milchkontroleur. Er wollte sich Weihnachten verloben, da er immer noch nach Dillmanns geht, aber er mußte wieder so abziehen. Die Frl. Dillmann hat sehr große Ansprüche, es ist ihr nicht genug was Otto verdient, sie sagt sie könnte nicht jeden heiraten wegen ihren Brüdern, die die guten Partien u. Stellen errungen hätten. Otto ist ja sehr dumm, er mußte sich ein einfaches Mädchen nehme was mit seinem Gehalt auskommen wollte. Denn Otto kann niemals auf sehr großen Verdienst rechnen, dafür hat er nicht genug gelernt u. damit muß er sich auch abfinden. Wie es mit ihrer Sache * einmal wird ist noch sehr unbestimmt. Das Wetter war kalt u klar. Übernachtet haben wir bei Albert Fink, welcher immer bereit ist, einzuladen, wenn alte Bekannte auf= tauchen. Am nächsten Tag suchte ich auch einen Rechtsanwalt auf wegen der Sache Glaser. Wir schrieben im letzten Brief an Karl, daß eine Kündigung, von seiten Glaser durch den Haus - u Grundbesitzverein zurück gewiesen wurde. 4 Punkte gaben sie an, warum die Kündigung wertlos sei, oder ich nicht berechtigt sei zu kündigen. </p><p>Der Anwalt sagte mir, daß ich zu nächst vom Amtsgericht einen Genehmigungsbescheid zur Kündigung haben müßte den ich auch sofort erhielte, da ich das Geld benötige. Der Anwalt will diesen Bescheid einholen, so daß man zum nächsten Termin 1 April kündigen kann. Auch ist jedem Käufer, (und das [insertion:] sind [/insertion] die 4 Geschwister oder Kinder der Frau Glaser) eine Kündigung zu übersenden. On the second day of Christmas [Dec. 26, a holiday] Johanna was in Schönborn, at the engagement party for Karl Prätorius and Grete Martin, who is the same age she is. Hermann Prätorius, who is a tailor in Hannover, also got engaged. The Prätorius family is planning on four weddings this year. That happens rarely. Uncle is having a hard time because of the dowry/furnishings [<em>Ausstattung</em>] for Hilda. Here young people buy bedroom sets for 4-500 marks. Title A name given to the resource Emmel Family Letters Description An account of the resource This collection contains letters sent to Karl Emmel of Green Bay, Wisconsin, the bulk of which were written by his parents Caroline and Wilhelm Emmel, with additional letters written by Karl Emmel's sister Johanna. Karl Emmel immigrated to the United States in 1925. His parents, Caroline and Wilhelm Emmel, of Wiesbaden, Hessen-Nassau, wrote lengthy letters to their son almost every month until they also chose to immigrate to the United States in 1927. In 1937, the couple returned to Germany and lived there until their deaths. Between 1937 and 1941 they once again took up the habit of writing a letter each month to their son in the United States. The final letter in this collection was written in 1945, just after the end of World War II in Europe. The early group of letters describe Caroline and Wilhelm Emmel's preparations for migrating to the United States. In the second group of letters, their experiences of living with rationing and making do in the context of war are primary themes. Erdbeeren sind dieses Jahr reichlich da Kirschen ebenfalls. Das Spätobst fällt nocht so gut aus, da während dem Blühen das Wetter nicht günstig war, auch viel Ungeziefer jetzt vorhanden ist. Hoffentlich hat auch unterdessen Joan ihr Paketchen von uns erhalten, u. Margie macht ihr später ein hübsches Kleid von dem Stoff. Kommen die Pakete ganz an oder sind sie auch aufgemacht? Hier ist das Wetter eben schön nicht zu heiß, bei Euch scheint es auch bis jetzt noch nicht zu schlimm mit der Hitze gewesen zu sein, denn Hedwig schrieb von viel Regen. Am Dienstag habt Ihr ja auch schon wieder einen Feiertag den 4 Juli. <s>zu</s> da könnt Ihr nicht verderben. Ich beschäftige mich immer, jetzt warte ich bis Johanna Ferien hat das wird übernächste Woche sein, dann will ich mir allerlei nähen, wo mir Johanna dann helfen soll. Vater muß in der Küche tüchtig mithelfen, auch besorgt er meistens die Einkäufe, da ist er dann oft ärgerlich wenn er nicht bekommen kann was er möchte. Diese Woche sollte er unser wöchentliches Quantum Butter 3/4 lb u. erhielt ausnahmsweise einmal 1/2 lb Margarine, dazu mußte er aber 1 lb Kirschen nehmen für 38 Pfg. Title A name given to the resource Emmel Family Letters Description An account of the resource This collection contains letters sent to Karl Emmel of Green Bay, Wisconsin, the bulk of which were written by his parents Caroline and Wilhelm Emmel, with additional letters written by Karl Emmel's sister Johanna. Karl Emmel immigrated to the United States in 1925. His parents, Caroline and Wilhelm Emmel, of Wiesbaden, Hessen-Nassau, wrote lengthy letters to their son almost every month until they also chose to immigrate to the United States in 1927. In 1937, the couple returned to Germany and lived there until their deaths. Between 1937 and 1941 they once again took up the habit of writing a letter each month to their son in the United States. The final letter in this collection was written in 1945, just after the end of World War II in Europe. The early group of letters describe Caroline and Wilhelm Emmel's preparations for migrating to the United States. In the second group of letters, their experiences of living with rationing and making do in the context of war are primary themes. I was also surprised that you are able to leave home and child so easily. Last year she went to a Catholic nursing home in Kiedrich. First she was supposed to go to Eichberg [State Mental Hospital] because she was no longer thinking clearly. Pastor Eikmeier was against it and brought her to the Sisters where she was well cared for until the end. Pastor Eikmeier did her funeral. The Sisters arranged for a very nice service, they accompanied her, the bells rang in Kiedrich; this made Pastor Eikmeier happy. In this way the old members of the community leave us one after the other. Some are still with us, for example Herr Nau, Karl Wagner, Prof. Wende and his wife, Doris Wagner, Frau Schmidt, all more than 80. This week he picked up our weekly quota of butter, ¾ of a Pfund, and as an exception was also given ½ Pfund of margarine, but had to also take 1 Pfund of cherries for 38 Pfennig.
