Nimm vielen Dank für Alles. Die 25 $ sind auch gut angekommen. Das Geld für das Reißzeug eilt ja nicht. Schickt außerdem kein Geld mehr. Die Dollar heben wir uns auf als Landungsgeld, dann brauchen wir hier keine zu kaufen. Wir hoffen ja bestimmt daß wir sie im Herbst gebrauchen. Was Du uns schriebst, daß Emmels ihr Haus verkaufen wollten u. s. w. hat uns sehr interessiert. Wenn da etwas daraus werden könnte würde uns gut gefallen, auch würde uns die Arbeit freuen, da würden wir uns schon leicht hineinfinden. Die Hauptsache ist auch daß es finanziell ginge. Wenn man annimmt 10000 Mk für das Haus ist doch sehr billig mit Land u. allem, wenn noch ein paar Tausend dazu kommen für allerlei Inventar Vieh u. s. w. Das können wir gut verzinsen u. behalten noch übrig. Dann wäre für uns gesorgt, wir hätten Arbeit u. auch zu essen. Es wäre auch gerade das, was Vater sich wünschte. Es wird ja hier von der Stadt aus sehr viel gebaut, das ganze Terain [sic] von der Kiedricherstr. bis Exerzierplatz ist zum Teil bebaut, das andere ist angefangen. Die Stadt macht den andern Hausbesitzer jetzt tüchtig Konkurrenz. Sie baut die ganzen Häuserblocks ohne Hinterhäuser mit Heizung u. allem Komfort den man sich denken kann. In 1 - 2 Jahren gibt es hier genug Wohnungen u. wenn dann die Besatzung fort geht, dann können die Haus= besitzer wieder sehen wie sie vermieten. Man sieht es jetzt schon an den großen Wohnungen, da gibt es schon wieder Schilder an den Häusern. Frau Stritter hat auch ihren 1 Stock seit Januar wieder. Die Franzosen gingen im Dezember fort. Jetzt hat sie die ganze Wohnung gemacht. Wie wir hörten hat sie an eine Schneiderei vermietet, welche 8 - 10 Mädchen haben. Das Eßzimmer behalten wir vorläufig noch. Wir stellen es in Schlafzimmer. Vater muß das Zimmer hinter der Küche wieder hergeben, dahin kommt 1 Bett von unsern u. eines bleibt im Schlafzim= mer. Ich arme muß auf die Mansarde wandern. Vor dem halben März lassen wir niemand herein, dann wird Telefon gelegt die Wand aus dem großen Zimmer soll in das Wohnzimmer u. s. w. Bis dahin wollen wir unsere Sachen geordnet haben. Wir haben schon tüchtig auf= geräumt, dabei kann uns auch Deine Steinsammlung wieder in die Hände. Vater ging gleich zum Agenten um sich bei ihm anzumelden, unsere An= meldung vom November hat keinen Wert. Der Agent will alle seine Kunden, sobald angemeldet wird auf dem Kon= sulat, selbst anmelden, damit wir beizeiten eine Nummer erhalten. Er hat bis jetzt ungefähr 20 Personen, Julius Trebus u. Heinrich Fink sind auch dabei. Jetzt heißt es abwarten was gespielt wird. Johanna ist am Montag auch wieder nach Hause zurück gekehrt, das halbe Jahr war rasch herum. wir müssen jetzt schon bald anfangen unsere vorderen Zimmer zu räumen, da H. Glaser am 1. April herein will. Das wird manchen Seufzer kosten, bis unser Haushalt aufgelöst ist. Nächsten Sonntag kommt Willy von Enne= rich mit seiner Braut um sich das rote Schlafzimmer anzusehen, damit soll der Anfang gemacht werden auch haben wir noch eine Kücheneinrichtung auf der Mansarde welche wir ihm auch anbieten wollen. Wie Du weißt haben die Ennericher ihr Haus im= mer noch nicht fertig, sie hofften von dem Hauszinssteuergeld zu bekommen, sie würden auch erhalten wenn sie aus dem Armenhaus Leute nähmen. Weil diese nun nicht bezahlen können auch voll Ungeziefer sind, hat Onkel es abgelehnt. Ihnen wollten wir 3000 Mark geben zu 6&#160;%, geeinigt haben wir uns noch nicht. Jetzt noch etwas. Als die Nordenstadter hörten, daß wir Geld erhielten, ging ihnen das Herz auf. Es war wieder ein Ackerziel fällig mit den Zinsen, die Geschwister hatten schon geschrieben u. s. w. Jetzt was machen, wir können Ihnen nicht alles geben das ist ausgeschlossen, wir haben hin u. her überlegt, u. da habe ich mich vorige Woche hin= gesetzt u. an Lenchen geschrieben u. ihm klaren Wein eingeschenkt. Die Kinder drüben müssen das Land frei= geben vorläufig zum Beleihen (sie können ja dort eine andere Vollmacht ausstellen.) Dann wollen wir 2000 Mrk leihen, allerdings müssen die zwei Jungen jeder 200 $ schicken zinslos gegen Schuldschein, das ist meine Forder= ung gewesen an Lenchen, sie soll es den Jungen mitteilen. Wenn sie sich nicht dazu verstehen, so bricht über kurz oder lang dort alles zusammen, dann die Zinsen u. den Wechseldiskont können sie ja gar nicht auf= bringen. Gestern war der Petter hier u. holte Geld für 4 Geschwi= ster das Ackergeld es macht mit den Zinsen 560 Mark u. unsere 140 dazu, es würde uns ein Schuldschein ausgestellt von 700 Mark. Schreibe uns einmal darüber dann werden wir uns es überlegen u. Dir darüber schreiben. Am ersten hatte unser Vater Geburts= tag, diesen konnte Johanna wieder mit uns feiern. Die Frl. Ilgen ist in Pommern wo sie seit März vorigen Jahres zu ihrer Erholung weilte, am 20 Januar gestorben u. auch dort begraben worden. H. W. Bender liegt auch schon seit 4 Januar an der Gürtelrose im Bett u. hat ziemlich Schmerzen. Das Wet= ter ist heute hier sehr schön die Sonne scheint wie im Früh= jahr, wir hatten bis jetzt fast noch nicht kalt. Bei Euch ist es gerade das Gegenteil. Für diesesmal will ich nun Schluß machen. However, if that is not possible because of the language barrier, we will have to find some other solution. We intend to leave about 40,000 marks of our capital here since the interest rate is a bit higher. We would then have 200 marks per month for the two of us, which is not enough to make a living, but sufficient to cover basic necessities. As you know, there is a mortgage in the amount of 34,750 marks with an interest rate of 6% on our house. It is registered as a refined gold mortgage. Our relatives in Ennerich still have not finished building their house. They had hoped to receive money from the rental tax fund. And, indeed, they would receive funds if they took in people from the poor house. However, since those people cannot pay and are full of lice, Uncle rejected the offer. We wanted to lend them 3,000 marks at 6% interest, but have not come to an agreement yet. Now something else I wanted to write about.<br /><br />When the relatives in Nordenstadt heard that we were getting some money, they poured out their hearts. Another payment with interest was due on their land; the siblings had already sent a letter; etc. etc. On the Sunday that I attended the baptism in Steeden, Father was in Nordenstadt. There, they explained their financial situation to him in detail. Things look very bad indeed. All they own is the house and 12-13 acres of land, which are mortgaged with 6,330 marks. Of that mortgage, the state bank lent 2,000 marks for Grandmother’s acres, which are in Petter’s name exclusively. However, he only received payment of 1,600 marks and now has to pay back the full amount at 9% interest. The remaindeer of the mortgage is owed to various banks. In addition, there are several bills of exchange in circulation, issued by a Jew from Igstadt and guaranteed by bran. It really is a pitiable situation; Father was very upset. What should we do now? We cannot give them everything; that is out of the question. We kept thinking about the situation, and then last week, I sat down and wrote Lenchen a letter in which I told her the sad truth. The children over there have to give up their rights to the land- just for mortgaging purposes at this time. (They can draw up a Power of Attorney over there.) Under this condition, we will lend 2,000 marks. However, the boys will each have to send $200, free of interest. In exchange for a promissory note. That is what I wrote to Lenchen, asking her to present my proposal to the brothers. If they cannot agree to that, the situation in Nordenstadt will collapse sooner or later, for it is impossible for them to pay the interest and bank discout fees. Yesterday, Petter was here to get money. The amount of money he owed his 4 siblings for the land, including interest, was 500 marks. After we added our 140 marks, we received a promissory note in the amount of 700 marks. Ernst will finish his apprenticeship in April and will need to work hard to keep the debt from accumulating at the current rate. Father feels obligated to help out in some way bwcause he cares about his reputation Nordenstadt. It goes without saying that the loans we give are registered and that interst has to be paid monthly. I just wanted to fill you in on everything that is going on here. Er erzählte mir auch von der Vollmacht, wir lasen einmal einen Brief von Lenchen worinnen sie versprach die Voll= macht zu schicken. Dieses ist aber nicht geschehen. When I asked him what he intended to do with the Power of Attorney, he said he wanted to sell some fields and pay off some debt. When I probed into how he planned to make a living, he did not answer.<br /><br />I imagine that he thought that the people in Allendorf had money and that Gretchen would come with a nice dowry. He probably planned to sell a few fields to the young couple since he was vehemently opposed to the idea of Gretchen buying bedroom furniture. In addition the ones in America did not send the Power of Attorney. Instead, Max wrote a letter, saying that signing the document would mean waving all rights, present and future. He then promised to send $150, while each of the boys would send $200. Apparently, Max has sent $100 so far and a promissory note, whereas the boys have not sent anything yet. Staudt Arbeit übernommen u. zwar vom Bezirksverband / Landeshaus, welche in den Albrecht Dürer Anlagen wieder zwei Doppelwohnhäuser bauen. Wir haben für ein Haus die Fensterklapp= Läden angefertigt. Der Liefertermin war in 6 Tagen, brauchten aber neun, es war für 975 Mrk Arbeit. Das Holz kostete 500 Mrk Maschine u. Nebenmaterial 100 Mark. Gearbeitet haben wir von früh ½ 8 Uhr bis Abend 9 Uhr um fertig zu werden. Unser Verdienst war per Stunde 1 Mk so billig wird hier eben gearbeitet. She has quite a head cold […]<br /><br />Last Sunday, I was in Allendorf at Wilhelm’s wedding. I was supposed to leave on Saturday morning already, but could not do so because we had accepted an urgent job. Therefore, we did not leave until Sunday morning at 10:30 and arrived there at 3:45 pm, with the wedding ceremony starting at 4 pm. We celebrated quite a bit and wished the young couple all the best for the future. There were probably about 35 to 40 people present, close relatives of the young couple as well as the godparents. Those who did not have a place to sleep had to keep on celebrating throughout the night. I left at 2 am to go and sleep at Karl Hannjuste’s in-laws. I woke up at 9 am the next morning, feeling rested. There, I also saw little Heinrich from Steeden, who had been there for 6 weeks already. However, his grandfather is supposed to come and pick him up this week. I also learned there that Karl Hannjuste got engaged again to the girl about whom mother wrote earlier. I assume that he will get married sometime in the winter. We haven’t heard anything yet from the people in Steeden themselves. […] Back to the wedding celebration: Around 10 am, I returned to the house where the celebration had taken place and found about 25 people gathered again. In those parts, they extend the celebration into Monday. We were served breakfast and then, at noon, lunch. The last few people from out of town, which included me, left for the train station at 2 pm. I was back at home by 7 pm. Wilhelm and his wife intended to leave on the following day. Today I found out, however, that Wilhelm had to return on his own because an aunt of Gretchen’s died on Tuesday. Gretchen stayed to attend the funeral and is supposed to arrive in Nordenstadt tonight. Now the folks in Nordenstadt have succeeded, and the desired help is there. Wir wer- den wenn alles geheilt ist auch Ersatz bekommen. Für die Zahn- behandlung hatten wir eine Rechnung von 43 Mark wovon die Krankenkasse 37 zahlte. Auch haben wir so ja auch aus dem Haus etwas, vielleicht bessert sich bis zum Frühjahr die Lage der Häuser. Dadurch daß die große Werkstatt vermietet ist, haben wir doch eher etwas. Die Miete würden wir auch jetzt vielleicht nicht mehr bekommen, denn es gibt schon wieder allerlei Räume. Wir hätten gern 50 Tausend für unser Haus, wenn wir dann 20 bar erhielten könnte das andere noch einige Jahre an erster Stelle stehen. Dann würde der Zinsfuß nicht mehr als 6% sein. Wenn man aber einen annehmbaren Preis erhalten will, darf der Zinsfuß nicht so hoch sein (Nicht mehr als 6%) Da wollen wir nun abwarten was wird. Es gibt doch immer noch Leute die Häuser suchen. Er hat jetzt ein Gesuch gemacht wegen der Hauszins- steuer, diese brauchte er nicht zubezahlen da er 72 Jahre alt sei. Der Hermann Mehl ist noch zu Haus. Er scheint auch wieder als Friseur zu arbeiten. Sonntags sieht man ihn mit dem Mädchen u. dem Kinderwagen, aber geheiratet scheint er sie noch nicht zu haben. Wie gut ist es doch daß wir es nicht in der Inflation verkauft haben. Deutschland ist ja jetzt in den Völkerbund aufgenommen worden, davon hoffen wir doch Erleichterung. Vor Pfingsten Wurde Wilhelm wieder ein Sohn geboren. Bei seiner Frau ist es immer die alte Leier. Er hat seine Schwie- gereltern seit dem Frühjahr bei sich, hat eine Magd für monatlich 50 Mark einen Knecht u. noch einen jungen Mann welcher ihm tageweise an der Schreibe- rei hilft. Herrmann wohnt in Ansbach u. war viele Monate arbeitslos mit 59 Mark monatlich Einkom- men. Jetzt hat ihn das Geschäft wo er gelernt hat in Idstein als Reisender angestellt für 100 Mark monatlich u. Provision. Er war neulich einmal hier bei uns. Wenn er nur auch jetzt in Idstein eine Wohnung hätte. Title A name given to the resource Emmel Family Letters Description An account of the resource This collection contains letters sent to Karl Emmel of Green Bay, Wisconsin, the bulk of which were written by his parents Caroline and Wilhelm Emmel, with additional letters written by Karl Emmel's sister Johanna. Karl Emmel immigrated to the United States in 1925. His parents, Caroline and Wilhelm Emmel, of Wiesbaden, Hessen-Nassau, wrote lengthy letters to their son almost every month until they also chose to immigrate to the United States in 1927. In 1937, the couple returned to Germany and lived there until their deaths. Between 1937 and 1941 they once again took up the habit of writing a letter each month to their son in the United States. The final letter in this collection was written in 1945, just after the end of World War II in Europe. The early group of letters describe Caroline and Wilhelm Emmel's preparations for migrating to the United States. Shortly before Whitsunday, another son was born to Wilhelm. Everything is still the same with his wife. Since the spring, his in-laws have been living with him. In addition, he has a maid, whom he pays 50 marks per month, a farmhand and another young man, who helps him with the paperwork when needed.
