Dez. 1937 </p><p>Lieber Karl Marge & Kinder! </p><p>Liebe Marge Deinen lieben Brief haben wir letzten Sonntag erhalten und danken Dir recht herzlich dafür. Es hat uns sehr gefreut als wieder ein Zeichen von Euch zu bekommen woraus wir sehe konnten, daß es bei Euch noch gut geht. Zur gleicher Zeit erhielten wir auch von Willi, Hedwig u. Tante Emmel's Briefe die uns Kunde gaben, daß bei ihnen so- weit noch alles munter sei, was uns auch sehr gefreut hat. Bei uns geht es Gott sei dank auch noch gut, die Ma ist etwas erkältet, hatte vorige Woche stark den Schnupfen und anfangs Woche kam noch Durchfall dazu mit Kopf und Leibschmerzen, das heute in seiner Stärke nachgelassen hat. Das naßkalte Wetter trägt eben viel dazu bei, daß man mit diesen Sach-- geplagt wird. Bis jetzt hatten wir blos 2 x Frost gehabt Nachts, worauf am Tage es immer regnete zur Abwechslung schneite. Sonne und Sonnenschein ist eben hier schlecht zu finden im Monat Dezember. Hoffentlich läßt sich das neue Jahr besser an. Karl Eure wirtschaftliche Lage geht wieder bergab wie hier die Zeitung berichtet. Was ist Schuld daran? Sind es die Überhohen Löhne oder hohe Profite welche die Gestehungskosten so sehr verteuern so daß der Baumarkt still wird. Bei Euch geht es noch gut, was auch bei uns der Fall ist. Unsere Verwandten sind alle im Feld. Johanna ist beim nähen, hier brauch [sic] man doch wärmere Kleider als bei Euch, da hier nicht alles so ge= heizt werden kann. Die Witterung ist schön ziemlich trocken, doch Morgens viel Nebel, welcher bis Mittag dauert. Vater ist heute nach Weilburg zu dem Finanzamt. Als wir von Frankfurt fort= gingen schrieb K. Martin nach Wiesbaden an das Finanzamt um einen Schein daß unsere Steuern alle bezahlt seien, diesen brauchen wir um auf der Devisenstelle Schritte zu tun zur Freigabe unseres Geldes. Eine Woche darauf verlangten sie ein polizeiliche Anmeldung u. da diese von Steeden kam schrieben sie eine Karte nach Frank= furt sie hätten alles nach Limburg überwiesen. Gestern war nun Vater in Limburg dort wurde ihm Bescheid gegeben es sei weiter nach Weilburg gegangen da Steeden dorthin zähle, Jetzt sind wir schon 3 Wochen hier u. gerade so gescheid [sic] wie auch drüben. Vater war einmal in Wiesbaden um einmal von jemand zu hören was die Häuser wert seien, da Frau Glaser schon nach Frank= furt geschrieben hatte, wir könnten das Haus wieder zurück bekommen. Der einzige der ihm Bescheid gab war Albert Fink. Dieser sagte die Häuser seien durch Hauszinssteuer noch schwer belastet, daß ein Haus was 5000 Mrk. Miete einbringe nur 40 <s>M</s> Tausend Mark wert sei. Unser Haus sei sehr verwahr= lost hat Vater festgestellt. Vater wird dann diese Woche sicher nach Frankfurt gehen u. dann auch einmal Frau Glaser auf= suchen, u. einmal hören was sie will. Natürlich sind sie furchtbar aneinander geraden [sic] u. es war so daß Vater abziehen konnte u. sich dann tüchtig ärgerte daß er hingegangen war. Die Entschuldigung ist jetzt durchgeführt. Wir erhalten einen Band von 540 Mark u. einen anderen Teil muß er mit 4 1/2 % verzinsen 52 Jahre lang. Bis dahin tut uns kein Zahn mehr wehe. Hier in Steeden hat sich nicht viel verändert u. doch auch wieder. Wie es früher war weißt Du Karl ja auch. Da war doch überall Wohlhabenheit, u. wie ist es jetzt! Die Leute schuften von Morgens bis Abends bei einem so geringen Essen daß Ihr Euch sehr umgucken würdet. Die Bauern bekommen ja Butter, aber den anderen Leuten steht nur 1/4 lb zu wöchentlich. Öl gibt es als einmal 1/2 Schoppen. Das andere Fett ist für die armen Leute wie Margarine. Kernseife zum Waschen gibt es fast nicht mehr man soll alles mit chemischen Mitteln machen. Das Brot sieht wieder so aus fast wie im Kriege. Das weiße Mehl ist ganz gelb mit Mais ge= mischt, u. so vieles andere. Wollstoffe sind auch rar u. sehr teuer. Das Buchen= holz die Stämme werden zu Stoffen verwandt. Gebaut wird dieses Jahr hier nicht, deshalb gibt es auch hier keine Wohnungen. Wir sind ja froh daß wir hier unterkommen konnten, wenn wir aber in Wiesbaden eine kleine billige Wohnung bekommen könnten würden wir lieber dort wohnen. Wie es wird müssen wir dem lieben Gott befehlen, denn Er weiß am besten was uns gut u. heilsam ist. Als Vater den Wiesbadener Pfr. besuchte deutete er ihm an er wollte die Synode um eine Gefälligkeit angehen, da sagte dieser das sei ganz ausgeschlossen. Ein andermal schreibe ich Dir einmal näheres darüber. Ich bin ja ganz gut beschäftigt ich habe das Kochen übernommen, da weiß man doch jeden Tag was man tun soll, neben im Zimmer schlafen wir u. heizen uns auch. In Ennerich waren wir auch Onkel hat keine Arbeit da es kein Eisen gibt, oder nur sehr wenig. Der liebe Gott wolle alles zum Guten wenden. Er wolle auch Euch behüten, vergeßt Ihn nur nicht. Our relatives are all in the field [...] here we need warmer clothes than where you are, because [houses] are not heated as well [...] Today Father went to the <em>Finanzamt</em> [tax office] in Weilburg [...] Karl Martin wrote to the tax office in Wiesbaden that all taxes are paid and asks for a receipt so that the <em>Devisenstelle</em> [foreign exchange control office] lets us have our money. A week afterward they asked for us to register with the police, this request came from Steeden, so then they wrote that Limburg was responsible. When Father arrived in Limburg, he was told that all the paperwork had been sent to Weilburg, because Steeden belongs to that district. Now we have been here for four weeks and know no more than we did before we arrived here. Once Father was in Wiesbaden in order to find out what the houses are worth because Frau Glaser had already written to Frankfurt that we could have the house back. Albert Fink told him that the houses are even more burdened with an estate tax, because a house which brings in rent of 5,000 marks is only worth 40,000. Father noticed that our house already looks neglected. Father will go to Frankfurt and see what Frau Glaser wants. Albert says the Glaser family will not have to pay back the mortgage to us.<br /><br />He also was in Nordentstadt. Of course they argued terribly and it got so Father could leave and then was disgusted with himself for going there. The debt has been written off. We will receive a bond of 540 marks, and on another part [of the debt] interest of 4 ½ % will have to be paid for 52 years. By that time none of our teeth will hurt us!<br /><br />Here in Steeden nothing much has changed, but then again [sic]. You know how it used to be. Affluence everywhere, and what is it like now? People toil from morning till evening with so little food that you would be surprised. Of course the farmers have butter, but other people are only allowed ¼ Pound a week [125 grams]. Also ¼ liter of oil. The other fat for poor people is margarine. There is hardly any decent soap anymore, we are supposed to wash with chemicals. Bread looks almost as bad as during the war. White flour is yellow, mixed with cornmeal [...] Wool fabric is also scarce and very expensive. Beech wood is made into material. There is no construction of houses this year, therefore there are no apartments. We are just glad that we could get a place here, but if we could find an apartment in Wiesbaden we would rather live there. How it will turn out we will have to leave in God’s hands, because He knows best what is good for and helpful to us. When Father visited the minister in Wiesbaden Father indicated that he wanted to ask the synod for a favor, but he said that was out of the question. I will tell you more about that another time. I am quite busy, I took over the cooking, that way one knows what needs doing. We sleep in the room next door and heat the place. Johanna war doch wieder in Steeden, da Luischen wieder krank war, u. ihr Vater auch verunglückt ist, er hat den Arm aus dem Gelenk gehabt u. das Bein gequetscht. Der Gaul ist ihm durch gegangen. In Steeden ist über all soviel Krankheit u. Not. Da könnte man immer helfen. Dort ist die viele Arbeit u. keine Leute die sie tun. In Nordenstadt ist noch alles beim Alten. Unterdessen wirst Du auch unsere Karte von Kölln aus erhalten haben, u. daraus gesehen haben, daß wir jetzt unsere Pässe u. alles in Ord= nung haben. Am 20. fuhren wir morgens 3,3 Uhr von hier ab u. waren schon 6,10 Uhr in Kölln, allerdings fuhren wir D. Zug. Um 8 waren wir am Consulat, um 3/4 9 ließen sie uns herein u. dann ging der Climbim los. Schön war es nicht, doch ging für uns alles glatt von statten. Allerdings verließen auch wir um 1 Uhr das Consulat noch ohne die Pässe, doch war alles er= ledigt u. Vater konnte sie um 1/2 3 Uhr allein abholen. Der Bahnhof liegt gerade am Dom u. so konnten wir auch einmal den berühmten Köllner Dom sehen. Er ist auch wirklich eine Sehenswürdigkeit. Dagegen ist der Mainzer nichts. Sonst haben wir in Kölln nichts gesehen. Mittags um 1/2 5 fuhren wir wieder zurück. Diese Fahrt war ja einzig schön. Denn den Rhein hatte ich soweit noch nicht gesehen, ich bin noch nie weiter als Rüdesheim gekommen. Unsere Möbel müssen wir sehen wie wir sie unterbringen es war gut, daß wir als im März einen Teil fortschaffen konnten. Das Eßzimmer bekommen Martins in Frankfurt. Unser Schlafzimmer würde die Ennericher Lydia nehmen für 350 Mark allerdings können wir das Geld erst nach u. nach bekommen. Hier in der Stadt ist es sehr schlecht los zu werden. Die gebrauchten Möbel werden richtig verschenkt. Wir erlebten es. Die Schwester von H. von Hunolstein starb im Frühjahr. Die alte Frl. hatte auch ganz gute Sachen, für 7 - 8 Mark ein Schränkchen oder eine Flurtoilette war der Preis. Sie ließen es öffentlich versteigern. Darüber müssen wir uns hinweg setzen, u. müssen sehen daß wir ohne große Kosten alles los werden an Verwandten u. Be= kannten. Herrmann hat jetzt im Oktober ausgelernt u. da soll er auch noch sein Gesellenstück machen, später will ihn dann Staudt nehmen. Darüber sind wir froh dann bleibt er doch in der Arbeit. His parents, Caroline and Wilhelm Emmel, of Wiesbaden, Hessen-Nassau, wrote lengthy letters to their son almost every month until they also chose to immigrate to the United States in 1927. In 1937, the couple returned to Germany and lived there until their deaths. Between 1937 and 1941 they once again took up the habit of writing a letter each month to their son in the United States. The final letter in this collection was written in 1945, just after the end of World War II in Europe. The early group of letters describe Caroline and Wilhelm Emmel's preparations for migrating to the United States. In the second group of letters, their experiences of living with rationing and making do in the context of war are primary themes. On the 20th at 3:30 in the morning we left here by train and arrived at 6:10 in Cologne, but we rode the D train. At 8 o’clock we were at the consulate and at 9:45 they let us inside and then went off the whole fuss and bother. Nice it was not, but for us, everything went off smoothly. However, we left the consulate around 1 o’clock, still without passports, but everything was done and dad could pick them up at 3:30 alone. The train station is near the cathedral so we were able to see the famous Cologne Cathedral. However, it is also a real attraction compared to it the Mainz Cathedral which is nothing [....] At 5:30 we returned. This trip was nice because I had not seen much of this part of the Rhine. I have never been further than Rudesheim. It is unfortunate that we have lived on the beautiful Rhine for 30 years, and still have not seen much of it. If we had not had to go to Cologne, I would have had absolutely no chance to see the beauties of the Rhine. Now comes the next, and this is to get the ship tickets, we will be leaving on the 16th of September to go to New York. We have to see how we can get rid of the rest of our furniture. It was good that we were able to start in March to start getting rid of some of it. The dining furniture will be going to the Martins in Frankfurt. Our bedroom will go to Lydia in Ennerich for 350 marks. However, we can get our money later. Here in the city it is very difficult to get rid of it. The used furniture is given away as a gift. A lot of things are publicly auctioned. Furthermore, we must ignore that, and must see that we get rid of it at no great cost to all relatives and acquaintances. Herrmann is now fully trained in October and since he will make his apprenticeship. Furthermore we are happy, then he will remain in the work [...] of Heinrich Fink has to wait until he comes to the top, we can not help it [....]<br /><br />From Nordenstadt we have seen and heard nothing. We do not go there and they have not come here. Three weeks ago the old couple were in church. They sat in the back of the treasury and after the Amen they fled from the church. Isn’t that a laugh? Dort hat er auch Beknn= ten von Ennerich. Hier ist sonst noch alles beim Alten. Jetzt geht es in unserer Torfahrt den ganzen Tag aus u. ein. Soeben fuhr ein Fuhrwerk mit Kohlen herein für [?] Ritterling u. zerriß das eine Tor. Die Scheibe ist entzwei u. das Tor ganz zerrissen. Was wir die 24 Jahre so schön behütet haben geht jetzt alles in die Brüche. Was ist es so gut daß wir ihnen nicht vermietet haben, so geht uns das alles doch nichts mehr an. Someone offered us the opportunity to introduce us to a gentleman from consulate, who would be able to help us with our application. Our number would not have been called up until January otherwise. Julius Trebuse submitted an application for his wife as well shortly before the consulate closed again. He was told that he might get a visa in January. Now that the Emmels have bought a new house, they will probably want to move into it before winter. We are very glad to be so lucky to have a house available over there right away. On Sunday, Gretchen said that he will probably sell some of the land, get rid of the horses, and pay off his debt, in which case Wilhelm would have to get a job somewhere. Wilhelm is a bundle of nerves. It is very sad to see him this way. Wilhelm cannot work everywhere; it is impossible. Gretchen feels the same way. Ernst makes 17 marks per week. He looks very unhappy because he is not allowed to leave. He has to stay for a few years and earn money.<br /><br />Next Sunday, Aunt and Uncle from Ennerich want to come and see us, and perhaps Aunt from Steeden as well. Father has been going to the dentist these past few days. He has had several teeth pulled. The dentist is now working on a replacement. We are anxious to see how the new teeth will work out. Die Pfingsten war es nicht sehr schön. Johanna war mit in Allendorf, konnte aber vor Regen u. Sturm nicht nach Berswod. Wilhelm fuhr einmal mit dem Rad hin. Die Kinder seien munter, einer von den Zwillingen lief bald. Im Juli wollen sie in ihr Häuschen ziehen. Es sei sehr klein, ein richtiges Armeleuthäuschen. Der Bruder vom Schelde Wilhelm hat sich in Allendorf eines gebaut für 12000 Mrk. Die Allendorfer jungen Leute bauen viel für 7 - 8000 Mrk. Da helfen allerdings auch die Eltern mit. Der Schelde Wilhelm hätte sehr schön zu tun, das ist ja die Hauptsache, dann kann er später vielleicht noch an sein Häuschen bauen. Am Sonntag war Karoline M. von Frankfurt hier mit dem Walther. Walther geht in die Schule, u. ist noch gerade so un= ruhig wie er immer war. Dieser war doch früher lange Jahre in Australien. Dieser übernahm es für den P. Lambert alles in Ordnung zu bringen, u. dieser reiste schon vor Ostern nach Wies= baden. Als nun alles fertig war zur Abreise schickte er ein Telegramm er habe keine Schiffskarte bekommen. So war der junge Lambert über 2 Monate daheim. Die Reise ist auch sehr teuer u. muß 800 Mark für die Ein= reise hinter legen, wenn er nur findet was er sucht, u. es ihm gefällt. Als Kaufmann ist es doch immer schwierig. So sucht der eine hier der andere dort sein Glück. Das Consulat ist schon wieder seit heute geschlossen. Da schon wieder mehr angemeldet sind als fahren können, u. das alles in 4 Wochen. Jetzt ist für viele wieder ein Riegel vorgeschoben. Was da für Leute auswandern davon kann man sich gar keinen Begriff machen. Das sind jetzt allein die Vereinigten Staaten. Es gehen auch viele nach Kanada u. Südamerika. Kanada ist frei, da kann jeder jetzt hin. Thank God for the construction going on since there is absolutely no work coming from private individuals.<br /><br />Johanna wants to go to Allendorf with Gretchen, Wilhelm and Ernst. She would also like to see Luischen in Bersrod, something she has wanted to do for quite some time. In July, Luischen will move into her new house in Allendorf. When in Allendorf, Gretchen will be able to discuss the situation in Nordenstadt with her parents.<br /><br />We submitted our application to the consulate and received the number 495. In my opinion, Uncles’s letter should convince them that they cannot expect any help from their children over there. Consequently, they should not rely on Uncle’s money, either. If they are going to pay interest from here anyway, they might as well borrow the money here. We have not heard much from them recently. Vater bekommt wieder Arbeit an der Kiedricherstr. sind wieder 14 Häuser soweit, daß die Schreinerarbeit vergeben wurde. Die Genossenschaft hat 4 Häuser bekommen. In dem andern Bau sind sie fertig bis auf die Fußleisten. Da ist es gut, daß das andere jetzt kommt. Herrmann hat bis Oktober ausgelernt. Wenn so Arbeit ist hat Vater ja auch etwas von ihm. Groß ist er nicht geworden, aber ein sehr ordentlicher Junge. Vater wünscht sich ihn ja<s>,</s> mehr lebhaft u. mun= ter. Vater u. Stadt wirken als immer noch zusammen. Die Frau Staudt ist schon über 1 Jahr krank an Krebs. Das ist eine ganz furchtbare Krankheit. Jetzt liegt sie ja immer u. es wird bald zu Ende gehen. Darüber ist Staudt ganz mit seinen Nerven herunter, daß er auf der Maschine an der Arbeit fast nichts machen kann. Da ihn sein Gedächtnis manchmal verläßt. Die letzte Arbeit hat Vater auch für ihn auf der Maschine ge= macht. So ist über all etwas, da sieht man so recht was die Erde für ein Jammertal ist. H. Nach Ostern hat er wieder ein neues Auto bekommen von Opel es ist offen es kostet 2900 Mark. Damit kommt er jeden Morgen angefahren, baut es vorn in die Torfahrt, daß alles drum herum gehen muß. Es ist nicht mehr so schön sauber im Hof u. Torfart<s>h</s>. Wir haben uns schon daran gewöhnt. H. Weimar hat sich seit voriges Jahr sehr gemacht. Er beschäftigt jetzt außer dem jungen Mann 5 Mädchen, er hat immer feste zu tun. Für die Firma Keiles macht er jeden Tag Arbeit. Diese<s>r</s> hat jetzt 60 - 70 Arbeiter u. Angestellte. Am Sonntag, war Petter hier u. machte uns wieder einen Skandal, weil ich zu Gretchen gesagt hatte, sie hätten ihm die Verhältnisse vor der Hochzeit sagen müssen. Er sagt einfach Gretchen hätte ja ihn nicht geheiratet u. s. w. Er will Äcker verkaufen u. Schulden bezahlen. Am vorigen Sonntag war auch der Schelde Wilhelm in Nordenstadt, da Lenchen ihm geschrieben hatte. Luischen dachte sein Vater könnte ihm zu ihrem Hauskauf etwas geben, sein Land 1 1/2 Morgen hat Wilhelm schon verkauft für etwas über 1900 Mark. Diese sind nun auch ganz geschlagen über die Zustände. Luischen thought that, maybe, her father could help out with the purchase of their house. Wilhelm has already sold his land, one and a half acres, for which he received a little over 1,900 marks. The Scheldes are very distaught about the situation in Nordenstadt as well. The folks in Nordenstadt are telling everyone that, had their daughters not married, they would not be where they are now. Now Wilhelm is saying he would not stay in Nordenstadt if he sold any of the fields and the horses. Im Civilkasino in der Friedrichstr. war Morgens um 10 Eröffnung der Bezirks= tagung der Synode welche auch in den Tagen hier war, u. abends 8 Uhr war dann das Conzert. H. Nickel hat den Messen= chor dirigiert. Er hatte von Leipzig noch 3 musikstudierende Amerikaner mitgebracht, wovon einer Solo sang, einer spielte Cello u. ein anderer Klavier. So war für Abwechslung gesorgt, auch war es gut besucht, da es keinen Eintritt kostete. Ich hatte ja an dem Tage genug zu tun, mit den vielen Gästen. Das Essen Mittags gab es für Gäste u. Gestern am Sonntag fuhr sie zum Besuch ihrer Pensionsfreundinnen nach Ludwigshafen u. Umgebung Wir denken daß sie heute Abend wieder kommt. Vater geht es noch gut, hat auch noch einen guten Schlaf, dieser dauert, weil Du es gern wissen willst, von Abends 9, 1/2 10 Uhr bis Morgens halb 7. Die letzte Zeit hatte er ganz schön Beschäftigung, das war für ihn gut u. auch für uns. Meine Zähne sind ja in Ordnung, doch manch= mal möchte ich sie herausnehmen u. weg werfen, es ist immer Ersatz, meine eigenen waren mir viel lieber. Vater seine Zähne lösen sich von dem Knochen u. hängen nur noch im Fleisch, hauptsächlich im Unterkiefer, da muß auch noch etwas geschehen. Dieser ist jetzt in Hamburg u. durch ihn seien schon viele Mädchen aus der Hamburger Ge= meinde ausgewandert nach Australien. Wir wollen hoffen daß es ihm gefällt. So geht als einer nach dem anderen von jungen Männern von hier fort. Hier im Haus geht auch alles noch gut. Heute erhält Glaser die erste Miete, einer von den jungen Leuten hat die Ackten übernommen u. kassiert die Miete. Was habt Ihr denn mit Eueren Magen nur ge= macht, daß sie so schlecht in Ordnung sind? Jeden= falls ist die Kost doch nicht richtig, solange Ihr zu Hause waret, hattet Ihr doch keine Beschwerden. Bei Durchfall haben wir hier Choleratabletten diese halfen gut, Vater hat sie im Krieg doch auch schon erprobt. Dieses ist das Neueste was es bei uns gibt. Nun noch etwas zu der Nordenstadter Angelegenheit. Ich schrieb Dir schon daß Wilhelm fort wollte, unser Vater suchte ihn nun zu bestimmen zu bleiben, denn wenn Ihr Vater alles verkauft geht auch alles fort. Er wollte alles verkaufen sich 15000 bezahlen; u. von 5 Kindern monatlich 4 Dollar haben Das wäre nach unserm Geld 84 Mark. Dazu konnte man doch nicht stillschweigen. Wilhelm bekommt jede Woche 6 M. Dafür muß er u. seine Frau die ganze Arbeit machen. Da sagte unser Vater das sei zu wenig Wilhelm müßte mindestens 10 - 12 Mark haben. Das hörten die Alten auch an. Doch am Tage nach Ostern machten sie den jungen einen furchtbaren Skandal, so daß Wilhelm den Arzt holen mußte zu seiner Mutter. Wilhelm sagt seit die Alten die Vollmacht haben u. er u. Luischen auch unterschrieben haben, hieße es immer ihr könnt gehen wenn es Euch nicht paßt. So Father tried to get him to change his mind and stay. After all, once their father sells everything, it will all be lost to the family. He was planning to sell everything and keep 15,000 marks for himself. In addition, he wanted each of his 5 children to pay him $4 monthly, which equals 84 marks. We could not remain silent.
