My dear uncle!

We have received your dear letter of April 29th and are all deeply saddened to hear that you are not quite well lately. Mama is especially worried that you are with strangers and not with your children, who are obliged to take care of their parents in their old days. You would reassure Mama very much if you
wrote

[new page]

more about it, namely how your children are doing and why you are not with one of them.

We hope, by the way, that it is not too bad and that you will get well with good care.

Mama would have liked to have written to you herself, but she also has a lot to do with headaches that sometimes make writing impossible for her. Mama was very happy that your daughter Lizzie got married and

[new page]

we all wish you happiness with all your heart.

In order to be able to tell you something about Winkler, Mama asked Hanau, and learned that Winkler died suddenly two and a half years ago. About Miss Sauer, Mama could not find out anything more. As you may already know, she is a widow, and no longer lives in her parents' house, but she is doing quite well.

Many things have changed in Hanau, so that you would hardly find your way

[new page]

around. It is much bigger and more beautiful now.

Now it is 300 years that the new town was founded. There will be a big celebration to mark the occasion. On the day after Pentecost there will be a big pageant, greater than anything you have ever seen here. I will have some newspapers picked up and send them to you.

Recently, the Grimm Monument has been revealed, from which I will send you a picture in the near future. Mama regrets

[new page]

that the news from Uncle Fritz is no better. We haven't heard from him for a long time. If you write to Uncle Fritz, send him many greetings from all of us. He should also write one day something Mama has been looking forward to in vain for a long time. With us so far everything goes quite well. Except for our dear mother, who is sometimes plagued by headaches, we are all healthy and that is the main thing or the best wealth.

[new page]

I have now finished my apprenticeship and am quite satisfied with my job. But my most fervent wish is to go abroad soon and see as much of the world as possible. Mama isn't so happy about it, though. I would be especially happy if I would be allowed to visit you some day and get to know you personally, of whom Mama tells us so much good things. Hopefully it will be possible for me one day, because when one is young, one hopes for everything.

[new page]

For today I want to close dear uncle.

We all wish you to get well soon and send you our warmest greetings and kisses.

Especially greets you in the name of my mother, your nephew

Carl Hirtes

P.S. The Kogler family sends you their best regards</text>

Mein lieber Onkel!

Deinen lieben Brief vom 29.

My dear Uncle,

As we haven't heard from you for a long time, Mama has instructed me to write you a few lines. You are sure to have received my last letter. Mama always intends to write to you and is unhappy that she never gets round to it. Mama finds writing difficult and needs a lot of time for it. She is always short of time since she became a grandmother. In January of this year my sister Gretchen had a gorgeous baby boy, who is developing well and brings only much joy to us all. The lad makes a lot of work and Grandmother is hard at work from morning till evening, so doesn't think about writing. Furthermore, Mama has a lot of headaches and back pain, which often force her to stay in bed. Mama asks therefore that you excuse her, and I am happy to write to you on her behalf, what she herself would wish to write from her heart.

Above all, she is always concerned about how you are. Dear Uncle, she asks that you write to her

[new page]

really soon. We all hope that everything is going very well for you and your family, but we would like to know for certain. We have also heard nothing from Uncle Fritz, which often makes mama very sad. Last year Frau Buhl, Uncle Fritz's sister- in- law, was here and promised to prompt Uncle Fritz to write to Mama but we still have had no news. You will be able to imagine, that Mama is therefore often upset. If Mama could do what she wished, a long letter would have by now been sent off to you. But as I already wrote, it is much too difficult for her. Once again, dear Uncle, I ask you to write to us. Everyone here is in good health. There is nothing particularly interesting to report. Businesses here are doing very badly. Due to these miserable villains, the English, who paralyze trade and commerce through the war of robbery they imposed on the small but brave Boer people. You also are sure to read the reports about this war. The reports from the theatre of war are read here with enthusiasm and each Boer success is greeted with jubilation. Have you read the speech of the Colonial Minister, Chamberlain? The noble, or rather wretched fellow dares to make a comparison

[new page]

between the war of 1870/71 and the Transvaal war of robbery. He places the English band of robbers on a par with the German militia army which, as can be seen from the following newspaper clipping, is praised even by French writers who have no affection for Germany. In many German towns party meetings are being held against this vile slander. It is really good for Mr Chamberlain that he does not have to come to Germany for any reason. I think the fellow would be stoned.

The assassination of President MacKinley has generated sincere concern everywhere here. It is really dreadful that there are still people who believe that they can achieve something through the assassination of a head of state. But the Americans have also been too lenient towards these crazy anarchists. In my view, everyone who openly confesses to be an anarchist should be brought somewhere and guarded, so that he can pose no danger to human life.

Dear Uncle, I will close for today. I hope to hear from you very soon, and maybe also from Uncle Fritz. I'd love that very much for Mama. Then I will

[new page]

write more to you.

For today I send you and yours all best wishes on behalf of my parents and brothers and sisters.

I too send you warmest wishes and hope to have news from you very soon.

Your nephew
Carl Hirtes</text>

                <text>Offenbach a/M d. 11 Novbr 1901

Mein lieber Onkel!

[new page]

[new page]

Mein lieber Onkel!

[new page]

schreiben.

Dein Neffe
Carl Hirtes</text>

My dear brother Georg!

It has been a long time since we received your dear letter, but unfortunately we haven't answered you yet. How often have I made up my mind that I would write today and then something came that did not let me come to write again. The letter writing is very difficult for me, because my head is always very affected. I was very pleased, dear Georg, that your health as well as your situation have changed for the better and that you can

[new page]

look ahead into the future without worries, God willing, that you may enjoy good health for a long time to come. Unfortunately I read in your lines about our brother Fritz that he (if I understand correctly) is not at his best, but I should be terribly sorry. I do not understand it actually, Fritz was nevertheless always very careful. Where are the sons, I believed them with Fritz in the business? Hopefully they will not let their father down. Please tell me more about Fritz in your next letter. If you write to him so greet him warmly that he may also remember his sister and send her a few lines, even if there are only a few, it would please me so much.

I don’t have an address of Fritz's, enclose it next time. With us, dear Georg, it goes well so far. Thank God we are healthy until now, and I count this for the greatest happiness. Heinrich is very busy in business, but it gives him a lot of pleasure. Since the death of our sister and brother-in-law, the business has expanded significantly. It is a great factory. Gretchen has been married since 14 January. We had a lot of visitors, work and high costs. She lives very close by. Now we are glad that everything

[new page]

is over and Gretchen is happy.

Karl had finished his service year in October 1899, but was called back for 8 months in April 1900. 8 days ago he was dismissed as vice sergeant of the reserve. We were very happy when he surprised us with his saber. He will write to you soon. Helene is still at home. She is very efficient in everything in the household as well as with all handicrafts. It would be hard for me if I had to do without her. Hopefully I can keep her for some time. One also gets older and sometimes very needy of rest.

How are your children,

[new page]

hopefully all of them are fine. Greet them warmly from us. I haven't been to Hanau for a long time, I don't think you would be able to find your way anymore. It has colossally enlarged and embellished itself, I've also become almost completely estranged. Oh so many friends and acquaintances are already dead and this touches me always terribly, therefore I go very rarely to Hanau.

I recently spoke to Pierre Kogler here, he is still very active in the business. He sends his best regards.

Wednesday is the 13th of June and the children have here a nice circle of acquaintances and we'll go to celebrate the lantern festival

[new page]

in the Offenbach forest at the Kaiser Friedrich Spring. A wonderful place. In winter I'm always looking forward to the time when you can go into the beautiful forest again.

Now dear Georg, I would like to ask you to write more often. I promise you not to let you wait so long. As already said Karl will write to you soon. So God protect you and stay healthy. This wishes from the bottom of my heart

Your sister Marie

From Heinrich and the children I send you the warmest greetings.
</text>
